There are a number of considerations taken into account before a mare is used for breeding at Windward Farm which tilts the odds in our favor for producing outstanding foals.
CONFORMATION- Certain conformational defects should be avoided at all cost when planning to use a mare for breeding. Far too often mares that are lame due to congenital weakness of one form or another are bred, and often, by so doing, an inherited weakness is passed on to their offspring. Because an athlete is ultimately being bred our mares must meet the highest standards of conformation (no crooked legs, dipped backs, or weak hips). This improves our odds of getting a foal that will be able to perform its work with a minimum of stress to its body thus helping to assure a long performance career.
